Food Not Bombs:

Aiding an Unconventional Community

Las Vegas, NV - Wednesday morning was an ordinary one for Ron Mecklosky. He gets out of his car and carries a massive tray of home cooked food to a concrete table in Huntridge Circle Park where he sets up to feed the homeless.

On the surface, one might see the stereotype of Huntridge Circle Park as a dangerous area filled crime, but instead it’s a thriving community of people just trying to escape the oppressively scorching Las Vegas heat and live to see another day. Huntridge Circle Park sits in the middle of Maryland Parkway just south of E. Charleston Boulevard and serves as a patch of green and shady refuge in the concrete sea of Las Vegas for people who have nowhere else to go.

Mecklosky is a regular volunteer for Food Not Bombs (FNB), which serves food to the homeless of Huntridge Circle Park every week. Founded in 1980 by a group of anti-nuclear activists in Cambridge, MA, Food Not Bombs is a worldwide grassroots organization with hundreds of individual chapters in 17 countries. They share food with the hungry and protest nuclear power, war and discrimination against the homeless. Another thing that’s special about the food FNB serves is, it’s vegetarian! The organizers serve only vegetarian and vegan foods and FNB are also animal rights activists.

From 11:30am to 1:00pm every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday the Las Vegas chapter of Food Not Bombs can be found serving food to any hungry person in the park.
